How come people call a shuttlecock a birdie?

geographical...like soda or pop...|||I have wondered the same thing, although I am one of those people. I guess it just seems weird to say "where's the shuttlecock" instead of "where's the birdie."|||i didn't know the word shuttlecock existed.|||cause it flies when you hit it and its easier to say...
